Help Preserve the History of the Goulburn Greek Community

Many of our community's records have been lost over the years. But the photographs, stories and memories still live in our families. Together, we can bring them home.

Every Family Holds a Piece of the Puzzle

For a century, Greek families have shaped the life of Goulburn and the Southern Tablelands: in its cafes and businesses, at church, at dances and celebrations, and in homes across the district. Much of that story was never written down, and each year more of it is lost.

We are building a permanent archive so that our children, grandchildren and future generations will always know the story of the people who built this community.

You don't need to know the whole story. Even a single photograph, a name, a date or a small memory could be the missing piece that helps us reconstruct our community's history.

What You Might Have at Home

Have a look through the albums, boxes and cupboards. You may be surprised by what is there.

Names & Memories

Photographs do not need to be professionally scanned. A clear photo taken on your phone is perfectly acceptable, and we can scan and return original photographs if you prefer.

Share Your Story in Person

Some of our most precious history has never been written down. It lives in the memories of our parents and grandparents.

If you or an older member of your family would like to share your story, we can arrange a relaxed, guided conversation, recorded on video or audio with your permission, at your own pace. These recorded interviews become a lasting part of the archive in your family's own voice.

Not ready to be recorded? You can also use these questions at your next family gathering, and send us what you learn.

Questions Worth Asking

  • Who first came to Goulburn, and when?
  • Which village or island did they come from?
  • Why did they choose Goulburn?
  • What work did they do?
  • What was the church and community like?
  • What do you remember most?
